Where To Stay: Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – Hodelpa de Nicolás Ovando Hotel (Colonial Zone)

Zona Colonial – The Colonial Zone. Eleven blocks of HISTORY! Nestled in the capital city, Santo Domingo. The oldest permanent settlement of the “New World”. Definitely a must see if you are visiting the island of the Dominican Republic.

Explore these well preserved Colonial streets, filled with SO MANY pieces of history including, churches, homes, monuments and museums. There are a number of awesome restaurants, shopping, art exhibits and musical entertainment to experience, and the people are amazing!  Just sooo much to see.

If you are exploring this magical little town, you can rest your tired bod at one of the many awesome boutique hotels located right in the zone! I happened to recently stay at the beautiful Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando Hotel.

This historic hotel located on the Ozama Riverfront, combines three (large) stone houses which were built in 1502. It was one of the very first properties to be constructed on the colonial land, and was the home of the first Spanish Governor of the Americas, Nicolás de Ovando and his companion Christopher Columbus.

Now, when I think about that, it is crazy to imagine that this beautiful hotel was once a home! It is pretty expansive!

The hotel property features 92 guest rooms, four guest suites, a beautiful outdoor pool area, many gorgeous courtyards, a lobby bar, library, games room, restaurant, and fitness center.

Beautiful outdoor pool area

The hotel is rich in Spanish colonial heritage, beautifully blended with contemporary design. It was a super cool spot to revel in, with original design elements like thick, rich wood ceiling beams, colonial style light fixtures, windows shaded with plantation style shutters, exposed brick, and dreamy arched entryways. It truly is a beautiful hotel.

The property features lush gardens and plants practically in every corner! 😍

The service was great, we were warmly greeted, and assisted. The staff are super helpful, and very kind.

Staying with a friend, we reserved a “Contemporary Room” with two queen beds. (Rates start at $118USD/night)

The room came equipped with air conditioning, a mini bar, coffee maker, LCD TV, complimentary wifi, full bathroom with shower and bathtub, bathrobes and slippers, safety deposit box, and a beautiful view of a lush courtyard below.

Hodelpa Nicolas de Ovando Hotel is approximately 25 minutes from the Las Americas International (SDQ) Airport, and roughly 2 hours from the Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). Conveniently located on Calle Las Damas, a designated UNESCO heritage sight in the heart of the Colonial Zone, with easy access to awesome restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and all the top sight seeing spots of the area.
